Defensive Line and Linebacker Fundamentals

Topics Covered:

We will discuss developing Defensive Lineman and Linebackers from the first day of practice and through the season by discussing stance, a variety of alignments, learning to read keys and playing as fast as possible. We will briefly discuss tackling as it pertains to filling and pursuit but will primarily focus on the ability to step and attack defenders and still maintain leverage and strength despite size.

We will discuss everyday drills and how these drills develop into inside run/perimeter run and even team defense portions of practice.  These skills can be used for any defensive scheme.

We will discuss both the defensive line and linebacker portions of pass responsibilities: pass rush or pass defend and how to limit the success of even mobile quarterbacks.

Coach Duke’s Bio:

William Duke has been the Defensive Coordinator for Blair Oaks High School in Wardsville, Missouri for the last 3 seasons.  During that time Blair Oaks has operated in both a 4-3/4-2-5 and 3-4 scheme registering a record of 34-6 playing in the state semi-finals twice (once in class 2 and once in class 3) and the district title game once. Prior to Coach Duke’s time at the high school level he was the head 8th grade coach for the Junior Falcon Football program (feeder program for Blair Oaks High School). During his tenure his teams won 2 league titles.
